Established in February of 2016, Rip City Masters, a men’s adult basketball league targeting the Baby Boomer generation is beginning play at Portland’s Hillside Community Center. The 60+ age group has assembled four teams and will play every Sunday afternoon thru April, with games beginning at 2:00 pm and 3:15 pm.
While there are no ex-Trailblazers, and a noticeable lack of dunking, the passion for the game of basketball still lives on for those “seasoned” players. Rip City Masters a chance to return to organized games, complete with jerseys, referees, and time clocks is proving almost irresistible.
Organizer KJ White suggests the timing is right for this new adventure in the round-ball sport. “We all want to stay active and fully engaged, but not to the point where we still have to prove ourselves on the court against 20 and 30-year-olds. This league takes us beyond casual pickup games to provide a controlled setting and a dash of competitiveness against one’s peers.”
The squads will play full court, although not as long as college length, and 30 minute games with mostly stop time. Players interested in joining the fun, can contact White at 503-656-0370 or email@example.com. Hillside is located at 653 NW Culpepper Terrace, west of Good Samaritan Hospital.
