Tips for Successful Hearing Aid Usage
When people are new to hearing aids, they often feel the need to remove the hearing aid when they talk on the phone. In fact, this is the number one way hearing aids are lost or damaged...the hearing aid was removed for a phone call, placed on a counter or end table, knocked off, and stepped on or eaten by the family dog. Hearing aids are made to help you hear on the phone. If you feel the need to remove your hearing aid on the phone, then it is imperative that you return to your hearing care provider to discuss options for telephone use.
The next time you start to make a phone call, take a moment to observe your environment. Remove any extra noise (for example, turn the TV off), or go to a room that is quiet. Successful communication exchanges on the phone have a lot to do with how much noise is in your environment.
If you hear lots of extraneous noise coming from the other end of the line, don't be afraid to say something about it! Ask your communication partner to put the phone closer to his or her mouth, to stop using the speaker phone, or to move to a quiet location so that you can hear his or her voice more clearly.
